Walter Williams: Peaceful Muslims must die

Because those millions of peace-loving Muslims do not speak out and expose terrorists and don’t more fully cooperate with domestic and international authorities trying to stop terrorists, they become enemies of the West just as the peace-loving people in Germany, Italy and Japan became enemies of the Allied powers during World War II. Like them, Muslims should be prepared to suffer the full might of the West in its efforts to fight terrorism.

I have lost all respect for Walter Williams after reading his latest piece, where he essentially calls for the destruction of all Muslims in the war on terror.

Why millions and millions of Muslims must die to pay for the sins of a small group of a few thousand rogue terrorists is beyond me. Somehow, in the minds of many Americans, this is justified. No, it isn’t. Whether they agree in principle with the terrorists or not is irrelevant–as long as they were not complicit in the attacks on United States soil in 2001, we have no right whatsoever to carpet bomb them. We are not fighting a nation–a government. We are fighting a rogue group of people. If our military carpet bombs cities in Arab lands then they are simply committing murder.

I noted that we are fighting a rogue group of people and not a government. A government can only exist if it has, to some degree, the consent of the people. If the people stop supporting the government, then expect a change to happen shortly–the monarchy or democracy cannot last but a short time. In World War II, most Germans were in full support of Hitler, even if they “loved peace”. Atrocities were committed in World War II, but we had to stop the Germans from attacking us once we became involved in the war.

The problem Walter Williams makes is the “war is hell” argument that General Sherman made in the War Between the States i nthe 1860s. To Sherman, raping and pillaging the lands and people is perfectly acceptable because that fits into the confines of war.

No, Mr. Williams, it is murder to attack people that are not complicit in the attacks on 9/11. Most of the Arab world is not al-Qaeda and it never will be.

  2. However, current technology allows a level of selectivity and superiority that Williams is not taking into account. Had Rooseevelt had the technology of selectivity and the vast superiority we currently have, I’m sure 1941-1945 would have been fought pretty much how 2003-2008 in Iraq has been. And don’t think the Nazis and the Jaopanese Imperialists wouldn’t have become the ‘insurgents/terrorists’ of today. Ideological fanaticism works pretty much the same whatever the source.

Unfortunately, the less messy war is, the more likely it is to occur.
